Eleven Twelve area Specific Curet on Typodont

The 11/12 area specific curet is designed for mesial surfaces of the posterior teeth.  The correct working end is determined by making the lower shank parallel to the tooth surface you are working on.  Always start with the most posterior tooth in the sextant and move toward the midline.  Place the anterior 1/3 of the blade on the tooth just distal to the mesial line angle.  Begin to go subgingivally and interproximally with an exploratory stroke until you detect calculus.  At that time engage strong lateral pressure for your working stroke to remove any areas of calculus you have detected.  After the working stroke has removed the gross calculus, return to the mesial line angle and use a root planing stroke which is moderate but firm lateral pressure to leave a smooth tooth surface.
